Grief Support for the children of our community
Camp Conquer originally began as a private donation to provide children affected by the loss of their homes due to flooding with grief services. With additional donations from the community and the help of dedicated volunteers, our ongoing seasonal bereavement camps have became a reality for children in Baton Rouge.
Helping the children in our community
Camp Conquer teaches children how to identify, express, and most importantly conquer their emotions through activities that take them through the grief process. Each day, children are broken up into separate age groups so counselors can provide specialized activities and guidance. Because the camp runs solely on donations and volunteers it is free of charge for all children that attend. It is common for parents to keep up a strong front for children to help them through a loss, but in reality, it may be healthier and more effective to allow children to express their emotions freely in a way that promotes healing.
Club Conquer
Club Conquer is a group for kids ages 6-12 that offers a safe space for children to express their feelings and cope with the loss of a loved one through age-appropriate activities and discussions. The group focuses on helping children understand and process their grief while fostering emotional expression through creative outlets like art, play, and storytelling. With guidance from facilitators, the group helps children feel less isolated in their grief and builds a sense of community and support among peers facing similar challenges.

One donation makes a difference
“When we received the donation for grief counseling specifically for children, we knew we wanted to use it as a launch pad into something greater and more meaningful,” said Catherine Schendel, CEO at The Hospice of Baton Rouge.
“It’s been incredible to see how much support we received hosting Camp Conquer and we look forward to bringing it back even bigger each year to help as many children in our community as possible.”
